Information

Bankfield station opened in 1871 and was located opposite Canada dock that opened in 1859, it was next to the large Canada dock goods and passanger station that opened in 1866 it is seperated by Bankfield street, connections were added later to connect the two sites, until 14th March 1887 Bankfield station only had rail access via the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board railway that mostly run under the Overhead Railway and had many connections to other railways and docks.

Bankfield station was a goods only station, it was used by workers but not by the public, although during the Boer War it was used by troops it was in a deep cutting and was eventually connected to the main line by 3 tunnels that opened on 14th March 1887, the tunnels connected to the LYR Liverpool & Southport line between Bank Hall station and Bootle Oriel Road station, the three tunnels are known as St Johns Tunnel which is 109 yds long the Brasenose tunnel 67yrds long and the Canal tunnel 51yrds long and opened up into cuttings into the Bankfield station site that was all in a large cutting.

Bankfield station closed on 4th January 1965 along with the branch line, the tunnels have been left disused since Bankfield goods station closed, traces can still be seen but the tunnels and cuttings have been filled in sometime in the late 1980s, but the land had been left untouched, safeguarded for future rail use until 2019 after a report outlined the high costs of reopening and it being to small for modern goods trains.
