Bankfield Tunnels
The Bankfield branch had three tunnels and are not known by most but are still there today they opened in 1887 and closed on 4th January 1965, they connected to the Southport line between Bank Hall station and Bootle Oriel Road station to the Bankfield Goods station, the three tunnels are known as St Johns Tunnel which is 109 yds long the Brasenose tunnel 67yrds long and the Canal tunnel 51yrds long, these tunnels have been left disused since Bankfield goods station closed in 1965, traces can still be seen but the tunnels and cuttings have been filled in sometime in the 1980s, but the land has been left untouched, safeguarded for future rail use. The Bankfield goods station site is still there and the tunnel entrances are still there as the site is in a cutting and has not been filled in, the Bankfield station site is now a scrap metal yard, nothing has been built on the sites up to now.
With the expansion on freight to Liverpool docks currently there is only one goods line to Alexandra Dock, the Bankfield site has been safeguarded for future freight rail use, the site next to Bankfield the Canada Dock Goods station which is accessed by a separate disused tunnel was also safeguarded for future rail use but was released in July 2015, leaving Bankfield as the only future option.
