Sandhills Tunnels
Today not many traces are left of the vast amount of railways at the Sandhills area, but there was many different branches now there is only the current Merseyrail northern line high up on the embankment.
Originally a connection from Huskisson goods station to Sandon & Canada Dock goods station and onwards to the docks was connected via a tunnel opened in 1882 and closed in 1969, it to allowed the branch to pass under the Line that ran to Liverpool Exchange station, the tunnel passed under 2 viaducts, the 2nd viaduct was demolished in the 1980s, it used to be for the high level coal branch that ran to Bramley Moore dock goods station, today the west portal is completely bricked up. The east portal was bricked up but has recently been provided with a steel door.
The other tunnels are from the lines that ran from Kirkdale to Huskisson station opened in 1880, there was tunnels that run under Sandhills lane and a short tunnel that ran under the canal they closed in 1975 and all now have been filled in and the cuttings.
There was also a tunnel planned that was to extend the branch to Liverpool Central from Huskisson but it was never started.
